Poco prima del lancio la stampa aveva anticipato che il nome definitivo sarebbe stato quello assegnato al progetto, cioè Fiat 138. La Fiat, invece, decise di chiamarla Ritmo per non avere un'altra auto con un nome fatto da tre cifre.
