The approach to building the vessel was designed around the principles of the reliability and savings of a commercial vessel while offering the fascination and freedom of yachting.The ultimate explorer yacht, DOROTHEA III is built for traveling the world's oceans and has successfully cruised over 170,000 miles in the past 8 years. She has undergone 3 major refits over the past 10 years. The first, after her owner purchased in 2011, and the second in 2015 after having completed 2 Atlantic crossings, South Pacific, North Pacific, and West Coast of North America totaling over 70,000 NM. DOROTHEA III just recently completed an Atlantic/South America circumnavigation including cruising the fjords of southern Chile and Argentina. Her most recent refit, in the Spring/Summer of 2021, included complete exterior painting, generator replacement, engine overhauls, as well extensive maintenance to ships systems.The hull is constructed in steel with 20-millimeter steel at the keel, 12 millimeters going out from the keel and turning into 8 millimeters all the way to the bullworks.
