At 136 years old, she is a unique sight on the water and ashore. This boat has had several functions during her long life. Originally, the UNION IV was used as a steam turntable, equipped with a powerful 150 hp triple compound steam engine. Later she was converted to a turntable vessel with a crude oil glow head engine (ABC 60 hp) and then as a motor freighter on a fixed route with the same engine. In her next phase, she served as a motor freighter in free navigation, equipped with a 120 hp Moës diesel engine. Then the boat was transformed into a church ship sailing through Flanders, powered by a GM Detroit diesel engine of 165 hp. Finally, the UNION IV became a sailing monument, a combination living and working boat, powered by a 200-hp ABC 3MDX diesel engine. The boat has a teardrop-built hull, making her very fast and easy to maneuver. Her sailing characteristics are remarkable, as she always starts without problems and sails smoothly. She listens well to the steering system and can sail in reverse almost as fast as forward. The vessel has little propeller action in reverse. The hydraulics for the gangway, davids and gearbox were serviced by a specialist company, valves were replaced and adjusted. Hydraulic hoses completely replaced. The ship is equipped with WiFi via a digital yacht system. Autopilot, plotter, radar and depth gauge communicate with each other via nmea 2000. Victron charger, charging control and battery monitoring as well as solar system are monitored via mobile phone app or iPad.
