At 136 years old, she is a unique sight on the water and ashore. This boat has had several functions during her long life. Originally, the UNION IV was used as a steam turntable, equipped with a powerful 150 hp triple compound steam engine. Later she was converted to a turntable vessel with a crude oil glow head engine (ABC 60 hp) and then as a motor freighter on a fixed route with the same engine. In her next phase, she served as a motor freighter in free navigation, equipped with a 120 hp Moës diesel engine. Then the boat was transformed into a church ship sailing through Flanders, powered by a GM Detroit diesel engine of 165 hp. Finally, the UNION IV became a sailing monument, a combination living and working boat, powered by a 200-hp ABC 3MDX diesel engine. The boat has a teardrop-built hull, making her very fast and easy to maneuver. Her sailing characteristics are remarkable, as she always starts without problems and sails smoothly. She listens well to the steering system and can sail in reverse almost as fast as forward. The vessel has little propeller action in reverse. In addition, the UNION IV has a very distinctive sound, which makes her extra recognizable. The vessel is beautifully finished with many ornate details, and the riveted mast tube with the hoisting mast and two booms always attracts many spectators. She is furthermore equipped with a hydraulic bow- and stern thruster, generator, full Raymarine navigation pack including radar, underwater lights, bimini (new 2022), and a hydraulic-operated telescopic Besenzoni passerelle cleverly concealed in the transom steps. Looking at her hull and cockpit, it’s immediately clear that this yacht is all about both cool rides and lazy days in the sun. The hydraulic-opening garage, with an easy launch and retrieve system, houses a tender with outboard. Aft are two big sun lounges – one double and one single. A 350kg Besenzoni hydraulic crane is found under an electric operated lid that also houses the electric powered cable drum for the Riva’s shore power cable and little storage for cleaning items. Furthermore you find a hydraulic Besenzoni gangway in a cassette that slides nearly invisible below deck. Solid teak decks, original Riva wooden table and foldable super sturdy polished Riva chairs can convert her cockpit to a dining for eight. Under the starboard cockpit seat is the entrance to a very fancy crew cabin with twin beds, a large shower, sink and own head. In 2020 a new Waeco fridge has been installed for the comfort of her permanent crew.   Owners cabin: The owners cabin has been refitted with new alcantara headliners just weeks ago and for her king size bed a special mattress was produced. Beautiful lighted lockers are found throughout the master and a very comfortable make up table is integrated. En suite a very large head with all facilities as shower compartment, wash basin, toilet and bidet are found with the last two beautiful hidden under a grp Riva design lid. Corridor: In between Master and guest cabin the central connecting corridor is placed and also functions as super large storage for appliances as for example a vacuum cleaner and other householding items.   Guest cabins: On both port and starboard there are two ample sized guest cabins, both with own en-suite heads and identical facilities as the Dolce Vita’s Master head. Optionally the guest cabin twin berth layout can be changed to a double or even two double guest cabins. Helm position: On starboard a very well equipped helm station gives you full control of this beautiful Riva, a very nice feature is the remote control that enables full control from wherever you are. Quad digital interfaces powers the MAN engines as well as bow and stern thrusters. Although the navigation systems are a little outdated the systems work fine and give you all information you need. Madiz is one of a few yachts to have survived from the early 20th century, and arguably there is no other yacht of this size, age, and original standing remaining. Madiz was built in 1902 by Ailsa Shipbuilding in Troon, Scotland, and at 55.4m is the largest classic motor yacht currently listed for sale. Madiz can also claim the title of the oldest vessel in operation to have Lloyd’s classification. Originally commissioned by James Coates Jnr, from his friend and now legendary yacht designer G L. Watson, Madiz was intended as something of a mothership or support boat to Coates’ sizable schooner-rigged sailing yacht. With the outbreak of World War I, Madiz was taken by the Royal Navy and she served in the Auxiliary Patrol Service. The vessel was returned to pleasure yachting in 1920 and passed through the hands of several British yachtsmen. But it was not long before she was again called to naval service.
