Santo Stefano Belbo (Piemonte)
Katja was launched in England on August 15th, 1929, the year of the Wall Street crash in America and the beginning of the Great Depression that was soon to assail Europe. She survived the destruction of the Second World War after taking part in Operation Dynamo as a Little Ship, one of the 800 civilian vessels that evacuated hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers from Dunkirk in 1940. Katja is a 14.7 meter long motoryacht, designed by H. Parker and built of wood by the Brooke shipyard in Lowestoft. She is still in perfect condition thanks to the doting care of her four owners, two English and two Italian, the latest since the early 1990’s. Katja was built for Mawdesley Brooke, the owner of the yard that launched her in 1929, and was named for one of his daughters. The yard’s roots stretch back to 1874 when Brooke Ironworks, specialized in engines, began activity in Oulton Broad, near Lowestoft. Renamed Brooke Motorcraft between the wars, the firm was managed by Waveney Brooke until after the end of World War II. Katja’s first main engine was a 100 hp, six cylinder Brooke N°4059 type 40 F diesel, with a 5 hp Brooke “Dominion” as auxiliary propulsion. In 1931 she was sold to a new owner in Leicester for £ 2,875. Based for a period in Great Yarmouth, 200 km north of London and only 15 km from Lowestoft, in 1950 she traveled through the French canals down to the Mediterranean, flying the white ensign as a Dunkirk Little Ship. Katja welcomed the change from the misty English coasts to the mild climate of the Mediterranean. In 1967 she was given a new main engine, a 145 hp Perkins T6354, and a new 30 hp Mercedes auxiliary. In the early 1990’s she was purchased by a new owner from Rome, who sailed her in the Tyrrhenian from Tuscany’s Porto Santo Stefano. Sailing from her new base, Katja participated in classic yacht events in Montecarlo, La Spezia, Bocca di Magra and Anzio.   REFITS AND AWARDS  In recent years Katja has undergone several refits in Tuscan yards; Lacchini, and then Mileo. Founded by Constabile Mileo in 1951, the Mileo yard was known for their continuous production of dozens of wooden vessels. In 2003 the yard, run by the Mileo brothers Pompeo, Vincenzo and Domenico, began a major refit. The 25mm pitch pine planking below the waterline was replaced, with 8/9 meter long planks attached to oak frames with steel screws. The keelson was rebuilt to increase purchase for elements of the new frames, tightly fit between the keel and the stem. The hull was caulked in the traditional manner with calico, then faired and painted. The keel and stem, both of oak, are original. A new main engine (Perkins 240hp) combined with a four-bladed propeller, gives Katja a top speed of 12 knots. Other major jobs included fitting a bow-thruster, rebuilding the teak deck incorporating a layer of plywood, redoing the hydraulic and electrical systems and fuel lines, and replacing the wheel with a new hydraulic control. Remote steering is also set up, allowing Katjato be run from on deck while underway. The auxiliary motor was upgraded to an 80hp Perkins, with a folding propellor to port, giving her a respectable six knots. All this care lavished on Katja couldn’t pass unnoticed, and during the 1992 Monaco Classic Week she was awarded 156 out of 210 possible points, putting her at the top of the ASDEC classification. The ‘Associazione Scafi d’Epoca e Classici’ has been protecting and diffusing the culture of classic and vintage yachting since 1987.   “Her topsides have sleek and very elegant lines - a gentle joining of the deckhouses to their pavilions, a smooth transition between deck levels, with the aft deckhouse windows that follow the sinuous curve of the sheer, the handrails that gradually run lower as they approach the bow and the side deck that curves towards the coachroof. It all denotes the execution of an excellent design by a renowned boatyard.” This quote from the early 1990’s by Piero Maria Gibellini, one of the world’s authorities on motor yachts and auxiliaries, refers to Katja. Her present owner, after almost thirty years of cruising Katja, cannot but emphasize how well laid out she is, with many separate spaces to enjoy even when there are many aboard. The foredeck is a terrace over the sea, one of her strongpoints. It gives privacy when moored stern to, and there’s always fresh air even on the hottest days. A sturdy awning covers the foredeck, with it’s two chaise longue (originally from the ocean liner Conte Biancamano; launched in 1925, she was sent to the wrecking yard in 1961), table and benches for up to ten guests. Two sun pads are laid above the aft coachroof and the wheelhouse. A true gangway is mounted to starboard, for ease of embarking and disembarking.   INTERIORS AND THE BAGLIETTO TENDER  Katja’s refined interiors make her a welcoming and comfortable yacht. The fine finishings, from the wainscoting to the cabin cabinetry, plus the paintings and vintage gouaches in the owner’s cabin, all combine to remind you of the Orient Express and send you back in time. She has seven berths: two in the owner’s cabin forward, two in the guest cabin, and three from the seating in the main cabin – one twin and one single berth. Katja’s vintage launch is a work of art. Malu’ is a rare  and excellent example of a vintage yacht in perfect conditions. She was designed by Sparkman& Stephens and built at the highest standards under the direct survey of the RINA director of Livorno harbor. After a life as cruiser racer Malu’ received the most accurate and respectfull restoration and she is better than ever. Sailing Malu’ is just like diving in the past and her elegant lines and details are highlighted by new rigging, new sails, new engine and systems, new closets and interior furniture and new tapestry.The hull was completely emptied to provide a general refit and to protect her from the risk of osmosis (she had no osmosis anyway) the hull was treated with epoxy resin. The restoration was surveyed by one of the best known Italian expert, and in our experience of hundreds classic yachts to offer to demanding customers we have been amazed reading his survey. At the stern there are two platforms divided by the Suzuki DF350A Dual prop. Through a fiberglass step we are behind the C-shaped stern sofa that occupies the entire width of the boat. This solution is double-edged, since on the one hand it offers greater comfort thanks to the larger dimensions, but on the other it forces us to have to walk on the cushions (removable) in order to access on board. The free space to move in the cockpit is very limited since we have only a small rectangle that can be lifted manually to become a table or a sofa expansion. In this way an area is created where you can have lunch or simply stay with friends where they can sit up to 5 people. A few centimeters further on there is a fiberglass support which towards the stern shows a tip-up top that contains the gas stove with the sink. The presence of the stove so close to the sofa, however, makes it unusable when there is an open table. This means that it is possible to cook, and it is a great advantage for a boat of this size with this type of equipment, but at the same time we do not have many support surfaces where we can put the plates or pots if not the small steel plate that located on the left side. On the front part of the wet-bar, the cushions act as a lumbar support for the diver and co-driver. Even the lumbar support allows greater reflexes during navigation, but in the case of quiet family outings there is no support to sit on. The 911R and GT2 RS are just a few of the more recent examples that are aimed at filling a niche that isn't already taken by another 911 in the lineup. By early 2022, enthusiasts had been hearing rumblings of a new special 911 to debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show later that year- but what Porsche developed was outside anything they have ever produced for public consumption. Called the Dakar, this 911 is built to be driven off-road, with its name coming from the famously grueling Paris-Dakar Rally, which was won overall by a 911 in 1984. Based on a 992 Carrera 4 GTS, the Dakar's ground clearance is 50 mm higher than a standard sport-suspension-equipped Carrera and can be raised an additional 30 mm to get across larger obstacles. Porsche announced from the beginning that they would produce just 2,500 units for the world, and it quickly garnered a significant waiting list. This 2024 911 Dakar is a one-owner example that shows just 150 km from new. Porsche unveiled a number of heritage lives when the Dakar came out, but arguably the most desirable is the “Roughroads” paint scheme seen on this car. Intended to replicate the Rothmans livery seen on the original 911 Dakar race car of the 1980s, this modernized variant looks outstanding and fits with the theme of the car remarkably well. The 19” front and 20” rear 5-spoke wheels are finished in satin black and accented with a colored Porsche crest in the center. Wrapped in knobby Pirelli All Terrain tires, when paired to the suspension lift, these give the car a true go-anywhere look. The interior of the Dakar isn't largely different from that of a standard 911 Carrera GTS but does feature some nice features that would have otherwise been high-price options. To start, a pair of carbon sport bucket seats are upholstered in black leather with gray Race-Tex centers and feature deviated stitching in Shark Blue throughout the cabin. The Shark Blue accents carry through the rest of the cabin with more stitching on the door cards, Race-Tex wrapped dashboard, and color-matched seat belts. All of the Dakars came with a rear-seat deleted, and this one was properly specified with a rear half cage in place of those seats which both adds rigidity to the chassis, as well as making the car safer. Powering the Dakar is a 3.0 liter twin-turbocharged flat-6 from the Carrera GTS that is rated for 473 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. Even though the Dakar is set up with a heavier wheel and tire package, it is still exceptionally quick, with a 0-100 kph time of just 3.4 seconds. To give the car maximum control both on and off-road, the dynamic engine mounts from the 911 GT3 have been added along with two new drive modes to the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control for rallying and off-road. Power then goes through an 8-speed PDK gearbox, which sends power to all 4 wheels, and a rear axle steer system makes for tighter handling both on and off road. With just 2,500 units produced worldwide, the 911 Dakar is certainly going to be a 911 that is collectible for decades to come. The combination of Carrera GTS performance and go-anywhere suspension make this the perfect 911 for really any possible situation. This 27M ketch was custom built by Trehard shipyard in Antibes, France in 1984. The collapsible hydraulic keel allows it to access beaches and ports with very low depths of water. The yacht was refitted in 2004, 2008 and 2013. This involved a total reconstruction of the interior of the boat, maintaining the original layout. The first refit in 2004 included complete renovation of the engine room (including engine, generators, fittings, pumps, etc.), installation of the most modern navigation equipment, complete renovation of the electrical fittings and plumbing, renovation of the masts and rigging, cross-trees and boom, painting and caulking of the whole boat, restructuring of the stern deck, covering the steps to the transom door and gangway, full renovation of the interior with mahogany wood, completely replaced kitchen fittings and appliances. Further refits were undertaken in 2008 and 2013 and included 14mm Burmese teak added on to the whole deck, Rondal fitted hatches, modification of the cabin and bathtub by adding space for additional comfort, simplification of the deck movements, replacing winches and deck gear, sandblasting of the aluminium, caulking and painting, reviewing of cables, cross-trees and change of boom. The making of a masterpiece  The work of several artists absorbed by the spirit of their times are now and absolutely “as we speak” under construction to give you the one and only chance to obtain the masterpiece named “De Cesari 62 Da Vinci” Combining the famous naval architect Giovanni Ceccarelli and Paolo De Cesari and you just know you have the best recipe for a head-turning creation. A pure quality yacht that stands far out from all the rest.   With this all new 62 Da Vinci the yard created a refined fly-bridge yacht with the looks of a sophisticated, classic sports fisher and even runabout with its long forward deck and flush mounted glass panels. It’s here where you find the praised flared bow that ensures fabulous lifting capacity in heavy seas. When you expect the best, you are rewarded with the best. Now is there a downside? Well actually there is, only one is under construction and only one will be built. Giovanni’s perfect layout  We all like “ensuite”, we all like privacy and the Da Vinci provides you the luxurious triple cabins, triple ensuites and separated crew layout. The design features the lobster tail and widebody bow for her accommodation. Nowadays you won’t find any centre line placed engines anymore, all modern yachts are sailing with the naval architecture nightmare designs with reversed engines just to allow a larger inner space. The downside of it is obvious and reason for Ceccarelli not to go with the flow. With the all new De Cesari you have the advantage of a proper centreline design.   Master cabin   The master cabin stretches an impressive 5 metres in width from port to starboard, beautiful designed fully integrated storage is to be found in every inch the master carpenter could find. Large storage for clothing and linen is also one of the standards. The stunning part of this double is her fully separated ensuite shower opposite of the head with bidet, toilet and integrated sink. The wet is in this setup fully separated from the head that stays dry no matter what.   Guest cabins  On both sides of the 3 metre long -via glass hatches- top lighted corridor you find the guest cabins, in her standard setup drawn as two twins but if you prefer one twin and one double just say so. Both cabins benefit of their own bathrooms with also bidet, toilet and sinks. When I do the math we have a true gentleman’s yacht with three showers, three toilets, three bidets. …and then of course I did not even mention the cockpit shower, nor her crew cabin with own facilities… Also here Paolo’s carpenters created true pieces of pleasure to stay during the night or whenever you want to have privacy in luxury.   Mega yacht style Just as on board of mega yachts the dining table is a free walk around with a minimum of eight chairs, it is on board of the 62 Da Vinci where you find the same setting and atmosphere. Upon entering from her cockpit the salon is an oasis of space and opposite of the earlier mentioned dining the design allows a very large C-shaped sofa to relax or watch tv that is found hidden inside the dresser behind the dining. The 50 incher pops up at the touch of a button whilst the sound is second to none designed by a famous Dutch surround sound engineer.   Talking about sound now it is for sure nice to mention since I know De Cesari… ‘Sound is kept in the engine room and out of the cockpit by the insulation that a De Cesari is known for.’   Galley The galley is found on starboard and benefits of the U-shaped setup for maximum space. Gentle lifted on a platform fully integrated in her salon it is the galley that lets you do whatever is done in a gally but then with a view towards every angle. A composite worktop, full sized dishwasher, 4 zone induction HOB, microwave, grill, oven and double house-sized sinks provide the cook with all appliances he or she could wish for. It is De Cesari that can deliver a yacht with functionality in this open space designed yacht.   Inner helm Opposite of the galley there is a twin seat helm station with a full panorama glass in front. It is here where you find very comfortable cruising when the conditions don’t allow you to use the fly bridge. Two massive Raymarine Axiom Pro’s feed you with all requested information, flip the touch screens to any installable app and you can even use them for your entertainment or info displays that shows you the fully integrated Victron power systems. Fully integrated as well is the Raymarine HD broadband radar and the forward looking sonar that allows you not only to see where to bottom it is, but also what bottom you have down below. Steering by remote, the gyro sensor autopilot compensates roll and the rudder angle of attack so digging into the menu after changing speed is something from the past. Systems as anchor chain counters, wash down plants, searchlights, speedometers etcetera are all standards. As expected a well-controlled power steering system comes a standard too.   Cockpit Stepping into the cockpit you are surrounded with a massive bulwark of around 40 centimetres and the deck measures 12 millimetres of thickness. Again totally different to modern yachts where a teak deck will last for only about 3 years. On starboard there’s a wetbar with sink, refrigerator, icemaker and stainless grill. On the aft the cockpit door opens to allow free entry to the hydraulic up and down platform, very well suitable for a heavy dinghy or just to make swimming a true feast. The size of the platform is simply up to you as custom built is a standard with De Cesari.   Fly bridge   Finally a designer that understands how a good fly needs to be built. Fully open aft to ensure stern visibility for easy docking and a U-shaped settee in front of the helmsman for interaction with family and guests. Of course also here Ceccarelli designed a wet bar for comfort. All instruments are doubled towards the fly and there is also an option to store a dinghy on top if desired. If it was me that could afford a yacht like this I would choose the option for super large sun pads here instead of a dinghy. A five plus metre bimini keeps the sun to your choice and once down it reaches the outer lines of the open aft fly deck. Da Vinci himself couldn’t have drawn it better!     Built in the Adriatic by the finest Italian craftsmen that one by one just love their jobs. a De Cesari is 100 percent pure, 100 percent custom built for the happy few that not only can afford a De Cesari but moreover can enjoy the breath-taking beauty that she just is.   All in all a yacht that deserves a viewing.
